Just getting started!

Just getting Started!
by Lynne Fearman

One year ago, I was out with my Thursday painting group, at the new Monrovia Library. The library hadn't even opened yet. There was yellow tape around the perimeter of the new building that had just been completed.  I completed a small 5"x7" oil study of the library's entrance. I liked the way it looked and couldn't wait to put it on display in the Segil Gallery, where I am also an assistant to Laura Segil.
I sold the little painting to to a customer, who also was a volunteer at the library. She came back later to say how much everyone was enjoying the little painting that she was displaying at her desk.
As we talked, I found out that her husband was in the printing field. I had the idea that we work together to help out the library by using the painting to raise money for the library. I gave her permission to use the image I painted, in any way that would raise money for the library.
Now my painting is on coffee cups, that are sold in the bookstore, on book marks, and all the signage for the library's programs.
It's been a wonderful way to help out the library I love, and I'm getting free publicity.

Bearlovian Paradise

This year, the city of Monrovia is celebrating it's Centennial by doing a city art project. Using a 4'x4'x3' fiberglass bear, that will be decorated by various businesses, and city departments, along with schools in the area, and go on display during the month of May, 2011, throughout the city of Monrovia.
The Monrovia Library approached me, to be the artist to decorate their bear, who will grace the entrance to the children's library. I've never attempted anything like this before, and I'm enjoying the process.

I had help from my patron of the library, Karen Hollinhurst, she had her painting & coating company do the primer coats of gray, sprayed on for me and sanded between coats. I found out that designing on a flat paper is a piece of cake, compared to painting on a curvy surface! It's surface is like concrete, and not very smooth, and seems to absorb paint like a sponge.

The bear is large and will not fit anywhere but in my garage, so it isn't easy to heat in cold weather.
As I use my initial design as a guideline, I find there are extra areas that must be added as I go along.
There seems to be room for a small rock here, and a little frog there, and how about some flowers?

I'm one quarter done and coming around to the back side now. The design expands as my imagination grows. I don't want to leave any species out, not to mention flowers and fauna! The project is going to continue and I will keep you posted on the progress as it comes along.
